I read this because I'd heard people talking about it and I wanted to see how it worked. But it works.
It's true that the stakes are low: One former adventurer wants to make people coffee. That's it. That's the book. Even during the one stressful scene in the book, no one is in actual danger and it's clear pretty quickly that things will turn out okay, but I couldn't stop turning pages. It's an incredibly hard needle to thread, but the book makes it seem effortless.
You're pulled through by watching Viv create a community for herself somewhere new, and it does make you rethink what's exciting and compelling about the quieter parts of life.
